Polk State volleyball opened its season on a winning note today, taking two matches at the Hillsborough Community College Invitational in Tampa.
The Eagles began with a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-18, 25-18) over State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.
Mariane Cassiano led Polk State with 24 kills, along with eight digs and a block.
Gregna Fuentes made 25 assists, eight digs, two kills, and an ace.
Weiying Wu contributed seven kills, a block, an assist, and a dig.
Diana Carranza tallied nine digs and four assists.
Nayeli Vilchez recorded six digs, five kills, five assists, three blocks, and an ace.
Alexa Barral added three kills, three blocks, and a dig.
Hannah Forbes made four digs and three aces.
This evening, in a battle of the birds, the Eagles soared past the Hawks of Hillsborough Community College 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 17-25, 25-19).
Once again Cassiano topped the Eagles in kills with 29. She added 11 assists, four aces, and two blocks.
Fuentes reached double figures in assists again (31) while making three digs, two kills, a block, and an ace.
Vilchez had 10 digs, six assists, five kills, three aces, and two blocks.
Carranza also made 10 digs, along with three assists and an ace.
Wu posted 10 kills and an assist.
Barral finished with five blocks, four kills, a pair of aces, and a dig.
Forbes contributed four digs and a pair of aces, while Finderle made two kills, and Tirollo had an ace and a dig.
The Eagles (2-0, No. 2 FCSAA, No. 7 NJCAA) return to action tomorrow, facing Miami Dade College at 10 a.m. and taking on Pasco-Hernando State College at 1 p.m.
Head Coach German Del Valle's team plays its first home matches Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Polk State Invitational in Winter Haven.
