Polk State started the FCSAA State/NJCAA District Volleyball Tournament on a winning note today, beating Indian River 3-1 in Gulf Breeze.
The Eagles won the first two sets (25-23, 32-30), dropped the third (18-25), and won the fourth (25-23).
The Eagles advance to play Central Florida tomorrow at 10 a.m. Central Time. A win in the match would earn the Eagles a spot in Sunday's state championship game.
"We did a good job, but Indian River's offense is crazy. It's hard to read. We were prepared for that, but I don't think we followed our game plan as much as I would like," said Head Coach German Del Valle
"But the win feels good. We made a few mistakes, but we played well mentally."
Yue Wu, who last night was named Suncoast Conference and State Player of the Year, earned a spot today in the 25 Dig Club (26). She also made 36 kills, two blocks, an ace, and an assist.
Zoemy Barreto recorded 10 digs, eight kills, four assists, an ace, and a block.
Dayanna Teixeira had 15 digs, seven kills, a block, and an assist.
Elisabeth Piroli tallied 55 assists, 14 digs, and a pair of kills.
Laina Blanton finished with 10 kills, a block, and a dig.
Keisha Santana added 19 digs, a pair of aces, and an assist.
