Polk State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and went on to beat South Florida State College 3-2 tonight at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
In the bottom of the second, back-to-back infield singles by Trent Sinkfield and Sam Koruschak put runners at first and second. James Boldin followed with a single to center, loading the bases for Brady Gulakowski, who walked on four pitches to score Sinkfield.
A wild pitch sent Koruschak across the plate with the second run, and a fielder's choice by Drew Howard brought Boldin home to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.
The Panthers made it 3-1 in the third on a single, a stolen base, a ground out, and a balk.
They then cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, when three singles put another run on the board.
Starting pitcher Kyle Gamble (2-1) picked up the win with a strong outing. In 5.1 innings he gave up one run on six hits, walking none and striking out three.
Reliever Brandon Willliams pitched 2-2 innings, allowing a run on four hits. He walked none and struck out three.
Billy McKay retired the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save. He also issued no walks and ended the game with a strikeout.
Koruschak singled, walked, stole a base, and scored a run.
Gulakowski went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Howard singled and walked in two at-bats.
