Eagles begin season with road victory

The Polk State Eagles started the 2017 baseball season with a win today, defeating Lake-Sumter State College 4-3 in Leesburg, Fla. 

The Eagles scored first, putting three runs on the board in the third inning. They added a solo run in the seventh. 

The Lakehawks scored a run in the sixth and two in the eighth. 

Starting pitcher Jordan Spicer (1-0) earned the win. In five shutout innings he struck out four and walked one while allowing three hits. 

Justin Gill, Zach Schneider, and Justin Tworek worked in relief, with Tworek picking up a save. 

Zach Diewert went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. 

Cole Warken doubled, scored a run, and drove in two. 

Raudy Martinez singled, walked, drove in a run, and stole three bases. 

Jonah Garrison walked and scored a run. 

Skylar Frey doubled, and Isaiah Cullum and Austin Hoffman each singled.

The Eagles (1-0, No. 4 FCSAA, No. 11 NJCAA) hit the road again tomorrow for a 1 p.m. game against Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne.
