Eagles end conference play with 4-2 loss

The 2016 Suncoast Conference champion Polk State Eagles ended conference play with a 4-2 loss to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota tonight at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

Trailing 4-0, the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning. Skylar Frey led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Cody Burgess

Burgess then stole second and third, for his 44th and 45th stolen base of the year. He scored on Zach Diewert's sacrifice. 

Polk State had the potential tying runs on second and third with two out in the bottom of the ninth but could not score. 

Frey had three walks, a stolen base, and a run scored. 

Yeison Gomez went 2-for-4. 

Zach Biermann singled and walked. 

Burgess went 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases. 

Diewert had an RBI, Joe Strzelecki singled, and Kaylor Kulina had a sacrifice. 

Starting pitcher Chad Tworek (2-1) took the loss. Tommy Romero, Johnnie Schneider, Zach Schneider, and Justin Tworek all saw action in relief. 

The Eagles (36-15, 21-9, No. 3 FCSAA, No. 18 NJCAA) end the regular season with a game against Inspiration Academy on May 6 at 3 p.m. at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

They begin play in the NJCAA DI Gulf District/FCSAA State Baseball Tournament at 10 a.m. on May 16 at Henley Field in Lakeland.
