Eagles come up a run short against St. Pete

Trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth, Polk State had runners on second and third with no outs but failed to score, losing 7-6 to St. Petersburg College tonight at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second when Zach Diewert's sacrifice fly scored Nick Biermann. 

They added another run in the third when Cody Burgess doubled, went to third on Isaiah Cullum's single, and scored on a single by Biermann. 

The Titans, however, sent 10 hitters to the plate in the fourth, scoring six runs to take a 6-2 lead. 

In the fifth, Polk State cut the deficit to 6-4 on Cullum's two-run homer. 

St. Pete increased its lead to 7-4 in the eighth on a double and a single. 

The Eagles scored a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded error to trail 7-5. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Skylar Frey walked and Cullum was hit by a pitch, and Biermann followed with a double to score Frey for the game's final run. 

Starting pitcher Jonathan Bermudez (1-1) took the loss. 

Zach Schneider, Tommy Romero, Johnnie Schneider, Chad Tworek, and Justin Gill all worked in relief. 

Cullum finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. 

Biermann singled, doubled twice, scored a run, and drove in two runs. 

Diewert had two singles and an RBI. 

Brandon Gali collected a stolen base, a run, and an RBI. 

Burgess singled, doubled, walked, and scored a run. 

Frey had a single, a walk, and a run. 

Cole Warken singled and scored a run. 

The Eagles (17-7, 2-1, No. 9 FCSAA) travel to Tampa on Saturday to play Hillsborough Community College at 1 p.m.
