Eagles rally but come up a run short against Indian River

Trailing 6-3 after five innings, Polk State cut the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth before losing to Indian River State College 6-5 today at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

The Pioneers got on the board in the first inning, scoring a run on a hit, a sacrifice, and a single. 

In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles responded with a run. Cody Burgess walked, stole second, and scored on Isaiah Cullum's single. 

Polk State took a 2-1 lead in the second after Skylar Frey walked, stole second, and scored on a single from Burgess. 

The Pioneers responded with two runs in the third for a 3-2 lead. 

The Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning. After Cullum and Raudy Martinez walked and Yeison Gomez single to load the bases, Cole Warken's single scored Cullum. 

Indian River scored three runs in the fifth, taking a 6-3 lead. 

In the seventh, Martinez led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Gomez walked, and Warken followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Martinez and cutting the lead to 6-4. 

The Eagles scored their final run in the eighth. Burgess led off the inning by hitting the first pitch for a double down the right-field line. He scored from second when Martinez singled to right. 

Burgess went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run, two stolen bases, and two RBI. 

Martinez had a single, a double, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. 

Cullum singled, walked twice, scored a run, and drove in a run. 

Warken collected two RBI. 

Frey had two stolen bases, a walk, and a run scored. 

Zach Diewert singled, walked, and stole a base. 

Starting pitcher Zak Spivy (1-2) took the loss. Working four-and-two-thirds innings, he allowed seven hits and six runs (one unearned) while walking two and striking out two. 

Relievers Johnnie Schneider, Zach Schneider, Chad Tworek, and Jacob Kelley combined to shut out Indian River for the rest of the game. 

The Eagles (11-6, No. 9 FCSAA) play Webber International University JV on Monday at 5 p.m. at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
