Polk State players Casey Kulina, Sam Machonis, Cole Ondrejka, and Daniel Sweet were named to the All-Tournament Team yesterday at the end of the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA state baseball tournament at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
Kulina, 1-1 in the tournament, started twice and worked eight and one third of an inning in the first game, holding Palm Beach State to one run.
Machonis led all players with six RBI in the tournament. He tied for third in total bases (11) and hit .438 in five games. He had two doubles, a triple, three walks, and scored three runs.
Ondrejka tied for third in batting average, hitting .500 in five games. He had two RBI and two walks.
Sweet tied for second in stolen bases (3-for-3) and hit .429 in five games. He scored three runs, had two RBI, one home run, and eight walks.
Polk State lost to Miami Dade College 4-2 in the championship game.
"I am extremely proud of this ball club and these guys," said head coach Al Corbeil. "We play in the toughest region in the country, and to make it to the championship game is something to be proud.
"We had some guys really step up against some of the best competition in the country and excel on the ball-field. To have four of them recognized on the All-Tournament Team speaks volumes.
"I'm glad this group of guys had this state tournament opportunity, and I know they are moving forward better because of it."
