Jordan Barrett, Jose Pupo, and Jose Serrano combined to hold College of Central Florida to one run as Polk State won 5-1 today to advance to the semifinal round in the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA state baseball tournament at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.

Barrett worked seven innings, scattering seven hits and yielding one run. Pupo and Serrano each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

"Barrett made some big pitches when he had to, and for his first time in the state tournament as a freshman I thought he did a good job," said head coach Al Corbeil.
"He threw a lot of really quality breaking pitches today, and he did get some fastballs when he had to late.  He was a little jittery early on but he did the job, and our defense was phenomenal. "

Central Florida scored its only run in the top of the fourth. The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs. Polk State added a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Daniel Sweet walked four times. Sam Machonis (2-for-3) had an RBI and scored twice. Matt Piatt drove in two runs and scored a run.

The Eagles play Miami-Dade tomorrow at 4 p.m.
