Eagles blank St. Pete for fifth win in a row

Polk State won its fifth straight game tonight, shutting out St. Petersburg College 8-0 in Winter Haven. Eagle hitters struck early, scoring five runs in the first inning and three more in the second 

Jordan Barrett pitched seven innings and struck out six, raising his record to 4-1. Jose Pupo and Devin Vainer each pitched a hitless inning in relief. 

The Eagles banged out 14 hits, all singles except for a double by Matt Piatt, who also scored a run. 

Shane Gordon went 4-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Cody DeNoyelles (2-for-4), Sam Machonis (2-for-4), and Luke Parker (3-for-4) each drove in two runs. Daniel Sweet (1-for-3) had an RBI and scored two runs.

Polk State improved to 24-11 (12-5 and first place in the Suncoast Conference). The Eagles face St. Petersburg College again tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Winter Haven.
