Polk State College freshman Matt Pearce (Bonita Springs) fanned 10 over seven innings as the Eagles defeated the South Florida Panthers (13-34/5-14) 8-3 Friday in Winter Haven.
The strong pitching performance was the second in a row for the Eagles (30-14/11-12) this week in Suncoast Conference action.
Eagle sophomore Brett Jones (Plant City) earned a complete-game victory over the Panthers on Wednesday.
Pearce held the Panthers to three runs, one earned, on eight hits over seven and two-third innings on Friday. He walked one.
"It was huge," said Polk State coach Al Corbeil of Pearce's performance. "Matt had three pitches that were plus pitches. He really pitched well."
The Eagles, who are in third place in the Suncoast Conference, travel to Avon Park today, April 13, for the final game of the series in an attempt to secure a spot in the FCSAA playoffs as the season winds down.
"We know we need to win almost all of our conference games," Corbeil said. "We're still right in the thick of it."
Jones singled in two runs.
Polk's Paul Roundtree (Plant City) knocked in two runs. Freshman Daniel Sweet (Mississippi) added an RBI and scored two runs.
Freshman Cody DeNoyelles (Windermere) was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
