Polk State College Honors 2012 State Champion Baseball Team

WINTER HAVEN – Polk State College honors its 2012 state championship baseball team Wednesday, Dec. 5, with a ring ceremony at halftime of the Eagles' men's basketball game at the Winter Haven Health Center, located at 999 Avenue H NE.

The 2012 Eagles captured the state championship in Lakeland in May for the first time since 1992. They advanced to the (NJCAA) National Junior College Athletic Association's World Series in Colorado in May.  They concluded the season with a No. 3 NJCAA ranking and a 46-12 record.

The 2012 Polk State College baseball team garnered several awards during their championship run and first appearance at the World Series.
 

The team claimed its second consecutive Suncoast Conference title, earning a berth into the FCSAA state tournament.  

Head coach Al Corbeil was named the FCSAA (Florida College System Athletics Association) and Suncoast Coach of the Year.
 
Pitcher Alec Asher was named Pitcher of the Year and won the Robert Purkey Jr. Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Pitcher in the state.

Catcher Erik Hindmon was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Outfielder Mike Danner, infielder Conor Szczerba and Asher were named to the FSCAA first team.

Pitcher Brian Johnson was named to the FCSAA second team.

Szczerba was named Suncoast Player of the Year. Asher was named Suncoast Pitcher of the Year and Hindmon was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Head coach Al Corbeil was also named the Coach of the Year from the Florida Diamond Club, a non-profit club of professional baseball scouts.

The ninth-ranked Eagles (6-3) look to break their two-game losing streak against Daytona State College in men's basketball at 7 p.m.
