WINTER HAVEN - Polk right-handed pitcher Chris Waltermire has been named this week's FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.
The sophomore from Satellite Beach, Fla., was the winning pitcher in Polk State's 5-4, 10-inning victory over Hillsborough on April 18 – a win that clinched the Suncoast Conference Championship. Waltermire inherited a 4-3 deficit when he came on with one out and a runner on third in the top of the eighth. He promptly induced the Hillsborough Hawks into a double play on a squeeze attempt, then became the pitcher of decision after Polk State tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. He eventually pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts and earned the victory when Polk State celebrated a walk-off victory in the bottom of the tenth.
Waltermire, a native of Satellite Beach, Fla., is 4-2 this season. He has thrown 26.2 innings and also has 27 total strikeouts and a 3.04 ERA on the season.
The No. 1 ranked Eagles, who are currently 40-9 overall, 16-5 in the Suncoast Conference are gearing up for next week's FCSAA State Tournament. The Eagles will open first round action at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla., on Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. The Eagles will be taking on either Northwest Florida State or Gulf Coast State.
